Freshman Tips

Going into college as a freshman can be exciting and terrifying. It’s a fresh new start away from your family, your friends and familiar surroundings. Below are some tips for incoming freshman from Co-op Marketing intern, Samantha L.:

Tips & tricks:

  1. 1. Don’t overpack! It may seem like you need every piece of item from your home, but I assure you, you don’t. You’ll regret overpacking when run out of space in your dorm room. We’ve created a check list of essentials for packing that will help you avoid overpacking.

  2. 2. Start study groups. College classes are so much different from high school classes and no amount of college prep can get you fully prepared for what’s coming. Having a group of people in your class that you can work on homework and study with will help you when you get stuck. GroupMe will definitely become one of your most used apps. 3. 3. Explore! You’re in a new city with new friends. Why not make the best of it? Austin, Texas is known for its beautiful outdoor activities and amazing night life. Start a bucket list if you must. Take a study break and enjoy these moments before you realize you’re about to graduate, and you haven’t even explored this city you’ve been in for the past 4 years.

  4. 4. Start working on your resume. It’s never too early to be thinking bout your future. Before you know it, you will be attended career fairs and applying for internships. Take advantage of the career services that your college offers and the resume workshops they host every year.

  5. 5. Do the extra credit. You’ll be thankful later. You may feel like there’s no need for it when you’re already doing good in your classes but what if later in the semester you miss an assignment or get a bad quiz grade? It’s better to take advantage of any extra credit opportunities that your professors offer because not all of them do.

  6. 6. Get your textbooks early! Don’t wait until classes begin to shop for your books. They will be more expensive or out of stock. Check what textbooks are required for your classes and get them at least two weeks in advance for the best selection and prices. The Co-op allows free returns on textbooks if you return them before the 5th class day.Learn more about textbooks here!

  7. 7. Get involved! There are over 1,000 organizations on campus. Go to organization fairs and check them out! It’s a great way to meet new people and make new friends. It’s also a great opportunity at exploring outside your major and seeing what else is out there. The Co-op put together a list highlighting 12 student organizations they support each semester with student organization funding.

  8. 8. READ the syllabus. Your professors usually post the syllabus a few days before classes begin. This syllabus will lay out the assignments for the whole semester. Keeping up with it will help you prepare and keep you on track.

  9. 9. Meet your professors. Professors are people too and these people can help you out big time. Take time during your semester to go and introduce yourself and have a conversation with them. The more your professors know you, the better recommendation letters they can potentially write.

  10. 10. Take advantage of the free stuff! You will never get as many free t shirts, bags, and food as your freshman year of college. Take it all!

Your first semester at UT will be full of new and exciting experiences! Enjoy it and hook 'em!
